"I went to a public school in Nevada, and before that I went to Herzliya in Tel Aviv"

He blinked in surprise, "Tel Aviv? Wow, how'd you end up all the way over here? If you don't mind me asking."

"My mother wasn't too keen on me being enrolled in the Defense Forces, which is compulsory for all 18 year old Jewish Israelis. She thought that tensions were too high and the risk was too great so she brought me here. I didn't really have much of a say in this...." he said "But I guess I don't mind too much. I like it here enough."

He nodded, "Well it's good that you like it. It must be a really big change to make though. I can't imagine leaving here and going to a completely different country."

"I was definitely a little freaked out at first" he admitted "The culture here is so different. In Israel you can invite someone you just met over for dinner and it wouldn't seem strange. Everyone here seems so...strangely distant from eachother."

"I blame the media for that one," Christian replied, "they usually only spout off about scary topic such as murderers roaming the streets 24/7 and making society feel as if everyone's out to get them. It sucks, now a days it's like people are afraid of their own shadows."

"I totally understand what you mean. I mean, you don't have to scare people to get them to watch what you are putting on television and in newspapers" he said. "It just makes everyone unfriendly and hard to talk to"

"Exactly," he replied, "it's sad, but that's how it is here though, but so far everyone's been pretty decent here, well, unless you pay any attention to that Shark Tank blog."

"I looked at that blog once. It was pretty disgusting." he said and sighed. "I don't understand why people feel the need to be nasty to eachother. Whoever owns it probably has their fair share of issues though, and that's how they deal with them I guess" he rationalized "Not that their behavior should be excused."

Christian nodded, "I didn't think of it like that, the person writing those things must have it pretty bad, though, like you said, it doesn't give them an excuse to act the way they do. Hopefully whoever it is can sort themself out and get back on the right track."

"Yeah, taking your problems out on other people is pretty low." he agreed. "It'd be nice if everyone just ignored the blog, then it wouldn't get any attention. I'm sure thats what the blog is for anyway" he said

"Maybe, but I don't think we'll ever know. Sometimes people just need to vent their problems and feelings and this just got out of hand. Either way, I'm done with it. I mean, I'll probably look at it from time to time, but I won't believe a word on it."

"So" he started, trying to change the conversation. "What is there to do around here besides go to classes and clubs and what have you?"

"Well, I usually roam campus and talk to the other students, or I go down town and catch a movie. I also have a part time job as a life guard on the beach, so I'm usually down there after classes. How about you?" Christian asked.

"Well I'm kind of new to Santa Cruz, so I haven't had a chance to get involved in much around here. I heard there is a boardwalk somewhere, which sounds pretty cool though I haven't had a chance to look around or anything. My classes will probably take a lot of time anyway" he shrugged

He nodded, "The board walk is cool, maybe we'll go check it out together some time as a roommate bonding activity." he said teasingly, "It's a great place to take a date."

"Hah. That would be cool. I am pretty sure that otherwise I would be stuck inside the dorm and the library" he laughed.

"Right. And I haven't even had a chance to discover America really. I got my citizenship last month and I haven't really seen much." he admitted and smiled

Christian nodded, "Well damn kid, me and some friends should take you to Vegas some time, experience the really America." he joked, though he wouldn't mind going to Vegas, that place was great.
