I thought you had to willingly sign up for a parenting class to do this. Yulia looked at all the creepy plastic toy babies on the front desk. At least they're not eggs.
Yulias feelings about pregnancy and having children were so far negative. But back home in Russia, she felt like that was the only thing men saw her as. Her father had been pressuring her to find a husband.
If Aaron was her partner, the assignment would have been more tolerable. Maybe she could give the baby to Vlad ad he can raise twins. She didn't know who Emanual was and felt like it would be silly to walk around asking guys "Are you Emanual?" That was like Patrick and Spongebob in Tentacle Acres saying, "Are you Squidward?"

I don't understand why I have to take this class. The guidance councilor told me that I can't have all academic classes. That's ridiculous. Emanuel sighed I don't even like children.
Emanuel had almost entirely advanced classes, and if he had his way they would all be advanced, but he was told that he couldn't double up on his History class (he decided to take a college foreign relations class online to compensate) Unfortunately, Emanuel had to choose from a selection of only two non-academic classes. He could take either biking or parenting, and he decided to go with parenting.
Thankfully, Emanuel already knew who Yulia was when the partners were assigned. He happened to hear her name in passing somewhere on campus and remembered her face. Now all he had to do was walk up and introduce himself...but he still had a lot of new kid anxiety. He glanced over at Yulia. Do I just...go over there? He tentatively picked at the edge of his desk, and then finally stood up and walked towards Yulia. "Um... hello, I'm Emanuel. i believe you were partnered with me for the assignment?" his voice wavered a bit.

"Nice to meet you. I'm Yulia."
She didn't speak to males very often in a friendly tone. But this guy looked nothing like someone who would come up from behind and spank her ass, or whistle, or try a terrible pick up line. At least none of those were her partners.
She saw that he was about excited as she was. "So..." She dug her fingers in her hair. "How does this thing work?" It was just a doll. How can the teacher tell if it was taken care of or not? As long as the baby was clean, it should have been fine, right?

"I wish that were the case" Emanuel groaned. "This thing is like a computer. It can tell hot and cold... it can get sick, and it needs diaper changes" He looked through the enormous assignment packet incredulously. The teacher handed out the wrist bands used to tell how close the "parents" are to the baby. He snapped his onto his left wrist and adjusted it.

"I though this was going to just be a class with written tests and reading assignments" Emanuel said as he glanced over the packet at the "baby" on the desk. It was wearing a band like those given to the "parents". It looked like some kind of hospital band. The teacher passed around blankets, baby carriers, bottles and "diapers", which all had computer chips in them to record data.

'This thing isn't going to smell like shit, is it?" She wondered. She looked at the babies tag to see his name was Jacob. "We don't even get to pick the babies name."

"Ugh, I really hope not." Emanuel said, and put the packet back down on the desk. He held the baby out in front of him and stared at it. "I already do not like it" he exclaimed. It had eyes that never closed, and that just stared straight ahead. Its plastic limbs carried no pulse or warmth. The teacher walked around the classroom, holding the "Activation key" to the chests of the babies and they beeped as they turned on.

And right away, their baby starts crying. Yulia rolled her eyes and realized she wasn't wearing a bracelet.

"Oh, here let me just..." he picked up and held the baby and slowly it started to calm down. "If you're not wearing the band, the baby won't know that your'e the 'mother' " he gestured toward the wrist band on the table and put the baby in the carrier with a few swaddling blankets with relative ease.

"I guess I'll go get one then." she swung her arms as she walked over to the teachers desk.

How the hell am I going to juggle this with my classes and stuff? Emanuel thought as he stared down at the baby. I mean, I guess this is the point and all... to teach us about responsibility and whatever...but at what cost? he sighed, and clenched his jaw in frustration. I guess I'll have to double up or something. he thought about the pill bottle in his desk drawer back at his dorm and how much was left in there. He leaned down and pulled his agenda book from his backpack. The back page was covered in numbers and tally marks 20... alright...
He shut the agenda book and went back to the packet he was looking at earlier Ugh we have to keep a journal of all this?

She came back with a bracelet on. "So, what's your schedule?"

Emanuel thought for a minute "I have classes every weekday from 7 to 3 with an hour break at 11, but there is also the online class I have from 3 to 4. I have clubs and activities every Tuesday and Thursday after class and other than that my schedule is pretty open." he said. "What about you?"
Emanuel was the type of person who avoided "having a life" at all costs. If there was free time in his schedule, he either spent it studying or cleaning. In situations where he was required to devote his attention to something else, he had to deal with the frustration that came with it.

"Sure, if that works for you" Emanuel said, staring at the baby. "My roomate is going to kill me for this" he joked. He looked down at the manual again. "The thing doesn't even shut off at nighttime? Augh!"
