Ava Scott was walking along the sidewalk on her way back to the music room. She had took a break from playing her drums to go and get some food. She was like any other kid at the school mostly. She had red hair which was different but in a good way. Her mother was also a red head. Then there was her brothers who all had their dad's brown hair. She was almost to the music room when she saw a bird laying on the sidewalk. She walked over to it. She saw that it was hurt and she didn't want ro just leave it there. Nature was another thing other than music and drums that Ava liked. That included animals of all kinds. She wasn't scared od spiders and snakes. Though you would laugh to know that she was scared of rats and frogs. Ava picked the bird up and carried it over to a section where there was tables. There was so people at them but she didn't pay them any mind. She looked back down at the bird. It was a baby red bird. "Can anyone help me here? This poor bird is hurt. I don't think it can even fly yet" she said looking around.

Tidewater was full of selfish airheads. Grayson was sure of that. The students only cared about themselves. And parties, sex, and alcohol, of course. He wondered how he had been grouped with such a rowdy student body and if any of them would ever amount to anything other than washed up drug addicts who only wished to relive their "glory days" at Tidewater High. He rolled his eyes as a group of sophomores near him bragged about how many girls they had hooked up with so far this year. He was debating whether or not to call them out on their obvious fake sex stories, but his concentration was broken when a girl with shocking red hair approached the area where he was sitting, cradling something in her hands. He listened carefully as she began to speak to no one in particular, his eyes drifting back to her hands. "A bird?" he asked curiously, knitting his eyebrows together, "What's wrong with it?" It looked fine to him, although it wasn't even struggling to get away from her. He half wondered if it was already close to dying, too weak to fight her.

Ava looked over at him. "I don't know. I found it laying on the ground" she said. She rubbed the bird's wing. "He's not moving. Most birds fly when people get near them. This poor baby bird csnt even fly and it has lost its mom. See that wing?" She asked pointing to the other one. "It looks like its broken" she said

Grayson watched the girl, his eyes flickering back and forth between her and the bird. She was pretty, he noticed, and she seemed different from most of his peers. He nodded as she spoke again, studying the bird's wing carefully. "So what exactly do you do about a broken wing?" he asked, shrugging his shoulders, "I mean, I don't know about you, but I have no experience healing animals."

Ava looked up. "Well I do know that you can wrap it up. Maybe iff h it heals right the bird still has a chance to fly" Ava said. She watched him for a second. He didn't seem like a very happy person. Well not happy to be here seemed more like it. She could sure know why. It wasn't like Tidewater was such a good school. Sure they had some good programs but it was just like a normal high school. There was sex, drugs, hoes and your other groups like you would have at a public high school. "I'm not sure how to wrap a wing. Do you?" She asked

Grayson shrugged and shook his head simultaneously. "Sorry, but I really don't think I can help you," he said, looking down at the bird. He frowned, actually starting to feel bad for it. It looked helpless and scared, but he knew he couldn't do anything for it. He would probably end up breaking its wing even more if he tried to wrap it himself.

"Maybe you can help me. Come one here and hold it down. I think I csn wrap it" she said and took a shirt from her backpack. She tore it in half. She then tore it again making it small enough to go around the bird. She didn't want it too big or too small. "Now all you have to do is make sure it doesn't move. Which I don't think it will but just in case" Ava said.

Grayson shrugged his shoulders again, unsure of what to do. He wasn't sure he would be of much help to her, but he didn't want to say no to her. She was nice, and he appreciated what she was trying to do. He was sure none of the other students here would care enough to try to help. "Okay, I guess," he mumbled finally, motioning towards the table in front of him, "Go ahead and set him down, and we'll see what we can do."

Ava watched the boy as he though over what she had asked of him. It wasn't a lot to do and no one could really screw it up. She smiled when he finally agreed. She walked over to the table and sat the bird down. She poited to him where she needed him to hold the bird. "Just hold right there" she said as she started wrapping the torn shirt around the bird and the broken wing.

"So what happens if you don't do it right?" Grayson asked, watching as she set the bird down on the table. He sighed reluctantly and attempted to gently hold the bird to the table as she tried to wrap its wing. "I mean, maybe you'll just end up breaking it even more."

Ava looked at him. "I don't know. I know how to do it somewhat" she said. "I took a class at my old school about first aid. There was a chapter about animal first aid" she said with a small smile.."I'm Ava" shesaid to him.

"Grayson," he offered, although he was unable to hold a hand out for her to shake. He was still holding the bird carefully, afraid that he would hurt it more if he moved too much. He nodded towards the bird's wing. "So you think this will help then?"

Ava nodded. "Yea I do" she said to him. She finished wrapping the bird. "Okay this looks like it will do" she said to him. She picked the bird up. "Now what to do with it" she said.

Grayson watched her, releasing the bird from his grip when she finished. "It looks good, I guess," he said with a shrug, "But I really don't know how that's going to help. Seems like more of a hassle than anything."

"It will help the bird's wing heal" Ava said to him. "Plus it will be able to fly when it heals" she said to him. She sat down at the tableamd watched him. "I dont know where to put him till the " she said to him.

"If you say so," Grayson said with a shrug, taking a seat at the table across from her. He watched the bird carefully, looking for any signs that it was distressed from the wrap Ava had put on its wing. "Hide it in your room or something, I don't know."

Ava nodded. "I'll think of something" she said to him. "I don't think I have seen you around before" Ava said to him. Butshe didn't see a lot of people. She was just a down to earth girl. She liked to talk to anyone but she didn't like jerk guys or bitch girls.

"Well I don't really get out a lot," Grayson admitted with a small laugh, "I'm a senior though. I've been going here since my freshman year."

Ava nodded. "Well the only time I get out is to go walking or to go to the music room to play my drums. I'm a junior" she said to him. She ran a hand through her hair. She shook her head at people talking about a party. "Seems like paries, beer, sex and drugs are all most people talk about" she said.

Grayson laughed, nodding in agreement when she spoke. "I know," he said with a shake of his head, "I was thinking about that earlier. I feel bad for them, honestly."
