Adam once attended Tidewater High School when he was a teenager himself, where he met the love of his life.
Rebecca was everything he had ever asked for, and they were together from his sophomore year of high school, and married just after they graduated. They Spent six more beautiful years together until she passed away.
She had passed from labor complications--with having signed that in the case where a doctor had to focus on her or the baby, the baby would be looked at first.
She bled to death while the doctors worked on resuscitating the baby.
Adam's gorgeous daughter, Amelia, lived for just a few short days before her heart gave out.
His life was completely turned upside down after that. He had gone into the hospital with his wife, in glee with the expectations of walking out with a new little baby girl, but he walked out with absolutely nothing.
After losing his wife and child he focused heavily on bringing back all the happy memories he had with her, and begun teaching at Tidewater High to almost feel closer to her again. The fact that his brother, Matt, is also a student at Tidewater he knew that he would have the support from his brother that he really needed.

Adam chose to be a student counselor in the hopes of helping kids and focusing on their issues instead of on his own past. He was tired of being depressed, and didn't want other kids to go through the same depressing stage that he went through.

Considering that Adam had majored in Psychology, the principal had begged for him to take that on as well, and he happily did.
