Matthew, surprisingly, is a virgin. The furthest he has even been with a girl is making out. He understands that when two people get physical, emotions easily get involved. While growing up he watched his mom get hurt over and over again, man after man. He would see his mom go out on dates with men, and her truly start to feel something for the guys, but when she would finally sleep with them they would leave her heartbroken. While he grew up he would watch her eat ice cream and frosting, completely hurt over and over again.
Matthew just can't imagine himself having a girl invest herself in him and him do that to her, but at the same time he wouldn't want himself stuck with a girl that he doesn't care for.
He also fears about being hurt himself, so he just decides that he wants to refrain from all that until a girl magically falls into his hands that is perfect for him.
Until then, he is hands off and emotion free. And that's how he likes it.
